6 Spectacular New York Bakeries And Pastry Shops

We love bakeries… Megumi REALLY loves pastries but has always been disappointed by what’s available in the US. Luckily, some New York bakeries and pastry shops have changed her mind.

Here are 6 of them.

New York Bakeries (C)EatTalkTravelLevain Is One Of The Ultimate New York Bakeries

Levain Bakery was opened in 1994 by two women who were previously in banking and fashion but wanted a change. It’s so good that it has grown to four locations around NYC. If you’ve got a sweet tooth, you’ll love their cookies, which are crunchy on the outside and gooey inside. For bread lovers, their baguettes, and other loaves of bread are amazing, too.

We’ve tried a number of different things, but our favorites are Valrhona chocolate rolls, whole wheat walnut raisin rolls and of course their cookies!

Whether you love sweets or great bread, this New York bakery will quickly become one of your favorites.

PETEE’S PIE

Who loves pie? We do!

PETEE’S PIE is one of our favorite pie shops in NYC. They have so many kinds of pies! There are classics, like pumpkin, apple, blueberry, maple walnut, key lime, and cherry. But also quiches and seasonal pies made with local fruits. They also use fair trade sweetener, organic flour, and grass-fed butter. Another reason you might put this place on your list is that they are open late (midnight). After a dinner out, skip the restaurant’s dessert and head to Petee’s for their delicious pie!

Dough

New York Bakeries (C)EatTalkTravel

You may already know about the most popular donut shop in NYC or probably in the U.S.  If not,  you should know that these are not typical donuts. The dough itself is amazing, but so are the unique flavors like Dulce De Leche, Alfajor, passion fruit, and hibiscus. Not only are they Instagrammable, but also soft, fluffy and very tasty. We had to come back a few times since their donuts are so big that you can’t… or shouldn’t… have two or three at a time.

Bibble&Sip

New York Bakeries (C)EatTalkTravel

If you are looking for cute and tasty sweets, you’ve got to try Bibble and Sip. Their logo tells just what the sweet shop is like: cute and sweet. They have very good cream puffs, beautiful cakes, and cute macarons. We tried some different kind of cream puffs but earl grey, sesame, and chocolate were our favorite. You can check their seasonable sweets on their Instagram page.

Hungarian Pastry Shop

New York Bakeries (C)EatTalkTravelStepping into this old-school pastry shop near Columbia University is like going back in time. It’s one of the few places that doesn’t seem to have changed at all in the last few decades. It’s a cash only place with the honor system (you pay when you leave). Order at the counter and a waiter brings your order to your table with your handwritten bill.

As you might guess it’s an Eastern European bakery with a variety of different pastries, but they’re best known for their strudel. Joshua loved cherry, which has just the right balance of flavor and is perfect with coffee. People also rave about the baklava if your not into strudel.

Eileen’s Special Cheesecake

New York Bakeries (c)EatTalkTravelEileen’s started as a wholesale bakery but opened a retail store to go along with it after so many people loved their cheesecake. The shop is tiny and located away from the main area of SoHo, but it’s pretty easy to find once you know where it is. There are only a handful of tables, but the counter full of sweets will give you plenty of inspiration.

We recommend going with the classic, but they have tons of other options available in more unique varieties and flavors. Inside the store, their cakes are available in small tarts, but they also sell whole cheesecakes and ship all over the US.
